Lollypop Farm
Hamsters have long been one of the most popular small pets, and one look at those cute faces and dark eyes pretty much explains their appeal. Add to that the fact that they're easy to hand tame and easy to keep, and they're pretty much the perfect pocket pet. Are you a night owl? Even better, because hamsters are nocturnal and will enjoy hanging out while you're unwinding after dinner.
Hamsters have simple needs: a glass tank or cage with plenty of room and a deep base to accommodate lots of soft bedding for burrowing, a house, a food dish and water bottle, and hamster-safe chewables for dental health, along with opportunities for exercise and mental stimulation. Wheels are a big favorite, but make sure they have a solid surface to protect your hamster's feet. They find tunnels fun, too.
Hamsters also enjoy out-of-cage playtime. A runabout ball is a great way to let your hammie explore safely, but be sure to supervise to make sure they don't get stuck or overheat, and be sure they can't accidentally roll down any stairs. You can also set up a hamster playground in a kiddie pool, with everything from an empty cereal box to a hamster-sized teeter-totter, hide some treats and let them play.
Treats are a great way to bond with your hamster, but limit their intake and be sure to offer a well-rounded healthy diet. There are lots of good commercial options to choose from.
A special note about dwarf hamsters: The larger Syrian hamster and the long-haired Teddy Bear variant are genetically different from the dwarf hamsters, such as the Chinese, Winter White, and Roborovski (Robo) hamsters. Dwarf hamsters are prone to diabetes and should never be given sweet treats such as yogurt drops.
Full-size or dwarf, hamsters should live alone, because they tend to become territorial when they reach adulthood.
Looking for a cuddly cutie to keep you company? A hamster could be the perfect pet for you. Why not come check out our hamsters and maybe take home a new friend?
